I house-sat once in a really nice place in Baltimore, Maryland. Took care of the place for several months while the owner, a friend of a friend, was on assignment in Germany. There were a couple of issues: logs fell out of the fireplace during a party and the carpet needed to be replaced; the owner's kid came unexpectedly (his mother thought he was staying with family friends), moved in and was a real jerk for a couple of weeks...
But I had a super house rent-free in exchange for keeping the place looking lived in (to prevent burglaries), taking care of the lawn, etc. No pay but no rent.
