forceps are used to assist you during a delivery , they are only used IF you're cervix is fully dilated and you cannot push the baby out yourself, for many diff reasons, e.g too tired, baby is distressed, baby is back to back with you ect.
forceps are not Always used during a c-section but it is common.
if you are not fully dilated then the doctor/midwife may decide that a c-section or a ventouse(suction) delivery be carried out.
hope this helps.
some pre-term babies are delivered using mini- forceps around their heads to protect heir delicate scull bones during the delivery .

Sometime the baby doesn't descend as quickly as the Dr. may want so they use the forcepts to help, the controversy is that they can cause tearing for the mother and injury to the baby, not in all cases but my brother was delivered by forcepts and as a result part of his upper ear was ripped off, Ewww.. poor baby... I guess you have to way the good with the bad......

My son was delivered with foreceps. He was very close to delivery and his heart rate was dropping. They're usually used in cases where the baby is very low and close to delivery, and either there's an issue (like the heart rate) or if the mom is just so exhausted that she can't push them out. If the baby is higher up, that would then lead to a c-section.

My brother was a forcept baby, b/c he was stuck and could not come out. They do not like to use them b/c of the shape it makes the baby's head. Sometimes a baby's head will be "cone" shaped after the use of forcepts, b/c the head of a baby is soft, the skull has not fully formed yet.

They are used when the mother is tired and cannot push anymore, or there is a problem with the baby i.e drop in heartrate and they need to get it out quickly. In a normal labour there is no need to use them.

Forceps are only used in two situations:
1) When the baby is in danger and they need to speed up the birth due to medical emergency
2) When you have a doctor who is in a rush, and wants to speed things up for his convenience
If the baby is in danger, the doctors have to use any tool at their disposal...forceps can be painful and/or damaging to the baby's brand-new skin/tissues. There are (unfortunately) doctors who are still using traumatic methods during childbirth to make their job easier and faster.
I would ask to see your baby's medical file, and ask them to explain the forcep use...Good Luck!

I can only say whay they used them on me. The cord was around my son's neck & his heart rate started to go down.
The doctor told me what he was going to do & the nurses told me what was going on every step of the way.
I know I never want to do that ever. It hurt to much.
