The US has overthrown, tried to overthrow, or conspired to overthrow democracies in Iran, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Greece, Nicaragua, and just revealed this week, Japan; and those are just the most well known, there are others. The US also waged a dirty tricks campaign in England (spying, phone tapping and stealing secrets) to help the Conservatives overthrow the Labour party back in the 1960s.
The US has also long opposed democratic parties in many countries and helped corrupt and murderous regimes commit terrorism against democratic movements : Iran (the PTK got no support from Carter OR Reagan after the islamic revolution), Cuba (Castro WAS part of the democratic movement at first), Nicaragua, El Salvador, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Liberia, Indonesia, South Korea, and many others.
US foreign policy for the past 150 years has been and remains, "Whatever is in the best interests of the US, regardless of the consequences." Well, guess what? 9/11 WAS the consequence of the US's actions. The "crappy little country" was "thrown against the wall" and shown that muslims mean business.
"He may be a son-of-a-biitch, but he is our son-of-a-biitch."
- Cordell Hull, US Secretary of State (1933-44) on supporting a brutal dictator in the Domincan "banana" Republic
"Every ten years or so, the United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, just to show the world we mean business."
- Michael Ledeen of the neo-fascist American Enterprise Institute
Additional:
"ArgleBargleWoogleBoo" doesn't get it. When US citizens sit back and do nothing to criticize their government, do nothing to stop US foreign policy, then you are complicit in that policy.
There were no "innocent victims" in the World Trade Centre on 9/11, they were all participants in US foreign policy by being there. You can't expect to reap the benefits from the rape of other countries and not have somebody wanting payback.

Same story everywhere. People love democracy while leaders don't because it doesn't give them absolute powers. US leaders needs to come forward with a clear foreign policy that promotes democracy throughout the world. Some examples of the friendly countries in Asia:
China - Communist dictatorship
Pakistan - Military dictatorship
Saudi Arabia - Religious dictatorship
Iran - Friendly as long as it was a kingdom - enemy since a democratic country

Remember Saddam, he was an American Agent and they betrayed him, so what do you think is in store for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, U.A.E. at the right time, when we need more oil than they want to give than Saudi Arabia & Kuwait will become a democratic state. When we no longer need Pakistanis they too will become a democracy.
Now as for South Africa they are just black, Muslim & unwanted except for slave labor in England or as slave labor on the English plantations in Africa, so who care after its all over America will win the terror war.

America showed its true colors regarding democracy when in 1991 when its army fought a war to put the emir of Kuwait back on his throne. Think of what the founding fathers would have to say about that.

The current administration makes decisions and policies for one soul purpose, that is to further their agenda. Average American citizens have very little to do with it.

Unfortunately, our system of government does not allow for micromanagement. On the other hand, while we support democracies IF they guard individual rights, we don't support people who are a danger to us.
One point is universal, but vague. The other is immediate, and specific.
