Of course, and so should artists of any type. Art is expression of feeling, and an attempt to evoke feeling in the audience. Anyone trying to stifle it is guilty of being misguided at the least, and should be treated as such.

I'm a musician, not a famous one, I'll grant you, but a musician none the less. The idea that any American should not share his views and excersize his right to speak freely is, well, unAmerican.

We let a failed businessman (how can you not make money in the oil business...duh) a lousy sports manager (traded Sammy Sosa for a bag of chips and a coke) lead the country, so we should deny successful people like professional musicians the right to speak?

As the British would exclaim "Bullocks!"

Personally I wish they would just make music. Rolling Stone isn't even worth reading anymore unless you are a little left of Nancy Pelosi. I used to enjoy reading that magazine. They used to talk about music. I remember songs about love and relationships that I enjoyed when I was younger. This stuff they are making today with their ill informed point of view on the war just bores me and makes me think they aren't too bright..

I do like the country singers, it's because they are patriotic and I love this country just like they do.

They have the right to say whatever they want. We have freedom of speech. That said, It might not always be in their best interest. Look what happened to the Dixie Chicks a few years ago, they spoke their minds and their sales plummeted. They of course had that right, but they paid for it in terms of sales. Fortunately for them things turned around. The artist needs to know their audience. Melissa Ethridge could talk for 10 minutes about global warming and most of her audience won't mind, and it won't hurt her sales. Now if 50 Cent goes on about his views on the government for 10 minutes his audience will probably be pissed, and he will lose part of his persona and proabably hurt his sales. A "gangsta" doesn't discuss politics, even if he knows what he is talking about, and has valid points.

Someone here said that musicians speak out at their own peril. Doesn't that person realizes that there is more than one form of censorship, not just by the government? Threatening economic retaliation against someone who expresses a view that you don't like is not what this country is all about.

Well they do have that right. If people don't like it they don't have to listen. The far right will criticize these musicians saying they should stay out of politics, yet they are perfectly fine with the many many pro Bush, country western songs. Of course such hypocrisy it be expected from the far right it is what they are good at.

I'm allowed to go on the internet, and give my views.

I'm allowed to call into talk radio shows and give my views,

I'm allowed to write my local paper and give my views.

I'm allowed to stand up at a town board meeting and give my views.

We're all allowed in one for or another to get our views "out there" why can't Green Day be allowed to do the same thing?

You don't have to agree with me or them, but we still have the right.

I didn't pay $200 for a ticket to listen to a political primary or a Greenpeace rally. Shut up and play the songs I want to hear.

i really don't care to hear what celebrities have to say regarding the government, etc. they are paid to entertain us, not to give us their views on politics, etc. even if i agree with what the entertainer is saying, i tend to start shutting them out all together. i really start to not wanting to see them at all then.
