The dog jumped up and it was turned on just before the lite. I woke up with the smell in the house very strong of propane. What could have happened if I did not wake up?

I don't know what could've happened. You should call the propane supplier and see about getting a safer valve so that a dog can't do that. BUT for NOW, open all your windows and ventilate, ventilate, ventilate.

You could have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. Everybody needs to get out of the house IMMEDIATELY. Do not turn on any lights or electrical appliances. The gas is very volatile. Head to a neighbors house and call 911. Shut the gas off outside by turning the valve 1/4 turn. The fire department will do a walk through and possibly open all the windows and doors in your home.

It would be a good idea to invest in a CO2 detector......maybe two of them.

Propane is heavier than air, it pools on your floors and in any crawl space, etc where leak or valve is open. Lot of people don't realize how potentially dangerous propane can be. Opening windows alone may not do it, open doors as well. Also vent crawl space in low spots, not at top of foundation.

Propane is flammable AND explosive! If enough leaked, then it could cause an explosion.
