Janette, it is complete ignorance, just like those who think all fat people eat like pigs when in reality many are genetically predisposed.
Sadly we live in a world of ignorant, often nasty people.

hi, i reckon it's just because of the old ways! My daughter is profoundly deaf and we use sign language and she doesnt speak!! She gets classified as this also! it is annoying!! There is a lot of ignorance in this world and not enough education on a lot of issues regarding deafness! It can be scary for some people! It must be a case of running away instead of dealing with a new experience! Just a note to say we are all the same! It is just that we have different ways of speaking, living! If someone from another country who didnt speak english came up to me and tried to communicate i would try my best! Why not do the same for people who can't hear or have limited hearing?? I wish they did sign language in schools!! :)

It is just an old sterotype. I have a very good friend who is deaf from birth and you would never know it b/c her mother put her in an oral program and she talks very well but then i know other people from school who refuses to even try to talk bc their "D"eaf ( the cap b/c of a cultural thing) I've been a small part of the deaf community for almost 8 yr now from hs when i started ASL in high school and i made a few friends and it is strange going out with them and seeing people stare at us. Naturally my friends have never noticed it b/c thier accustom to it. One time i went with my good friend to buy a car and the sellsman would ask me all the questions about her finances when he saw that i was hearing and she was deaf... that was just so rude that we had to leave after like the third time of telling him to ask her the questions and not me.
BTW: some high schools do have a sign language program but they're few and far between. Normally they're very limited b/c there are so few teachers... who know what their doing. I'm currently trying to become one who knows what their doing.

Firstly, its because usually people are deaf from birth, adn because of their they didnt grow up hearing how people speak, and so they speak but very quietily and without pronounced words, so people dont understand it.
In this day and ago of Political Correctness, i am sure there are other ways of saying someone is deaf, as basically there is no ened to comment on the fact they cant speak.
For most of the peope i know, we just say people are deaf, and thats it.
AS for shouting, its called ignorance. When english people to go to a foregin country and are in a different culture with different language, they find themselves shouting at servers etc in english thinking that its easier for them to be understood. Basically stupidity and ignorance!

Who would call someone who is not mute "dumb"? I haven't heard this, and I have a couple of deaf acquaintances.
Shouting is simply ignorance.
People go away when they realize you are deaf because they do not know how to communicate with you.

I guess because they aren't used to deaf people and don't realise what their specific problem is and/or that it doesn't make them stupid or really any different from anyone else. It must be frustrating though.
