If you're clueless, get a Macbook (MacPro).

It will be the easiest to learn how to use and have
the best resale value.

We have a 2GB RAM 200GB hard disk with 15 inch
monitor and love it, though we could probably have
gotten away with 1GB and 160GB respectively. I think
the package came in for under $1900 but its been awhile.

Yes, Windows hardware will initially be cheaper, but
in terms of frustration, reliability, viri, etc, Macs are far
cheaper to operate.

And yes, you can "dual boot" - that is, boot Windows
or boot MacOS - you can even run a machine emulator
under MacOS and run Windows in it at the same time.
You'll need to purchase Windows as well, if you're going
to do that.

If you're going to be surfing the web, reading e-mail,
preparing documents, spreadsheets, etc, a Mac Pro
is a hard act to follow.

Your best bet is to go to a computer store, like Circuit City, and tell the experts what you want to do with the computer. They will steer you to the best option for memory, speed, and software that you'll need. We've bought two laptops in the last year and they have been and do everything they said they would. We have one Dell, and it is the better of the two so far. (The other one is my son's and it starts with an A...can't remember. But, it has had to be sent back because of mother board problems and Circuit City couldn't repair it. Check with them about stuff like that too.) There are places online that compare computers or give you a list of options you might check for. Like "Dave's Guide to Buying a Laptop" at http://www.css.msu.edu/PC-Guide/
Good luck!

Min 80 gigabyte (gb) hard drive
Min 512mb of RAM
Min 2.0 GHZ processor
Wireless card if you want to use the internet without plugging in a cable - but you will need to buy a wireless router to use it from home or in places where there is not a wireless access point (such as a cafe etc etc)
all the majors brands are OK

would properly be a great number of issues, yet i'd examine first for an overheating problem. Is the fan on your skill provide unit operating? Are different followers contained in the case, fairly on your processor, operating? If followers are ok, have you ever put in something new on your workstation at present? if so, your skill provide would properly be overworked. It also would properly be an outbreak, so run a fantastic virus-scanner. Do a spy ware test too. And in case you're at it, close down all unneeded courses (bypass to commence Menu and close down each little thing you do not truly opt for). If none of this helps, your demanding force, motherboard or RAM would properly be failing.

Gateway? NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, no matter HOW good of a deal you think you are getting.

HP makes great laptops. As does Dell and Sony. I suggest going to Fry's to check out all the parameters you want met, but any of them will get you what you need and expect the price to jump accordingly. Here is the website:

I get most of my periphery from here.
