All of this depends hugely on what you want a PC for - and how much of a budget you have.

If you want the latest software to run micro$oft word etc, then sure Vista on a brand new top of the range PC - though if you are n the UK, you will pay about twice a much as American people if you buy the software legally.

If you want to have software that is stable, not going to delete all you MP3 files because of Micro$ofts new DRM policy (scans hard drive and deletes things it feels should not be there), then perhaps you might like to stick with XP

If you play games, then VERY few will work on Vista for the moment - and with some games producers already saying they will not be releasing Vista-only matieral in the forseeable future, it would be a questioable plan to use vista for a games machine

If you have lots of peripherals - CHECK that a Vista driver exists for them - or will be very soon. At present there is a FRIGHTENING shortgage of drivers for equipment that is not "currently a production model" - on other words, if your MP3 / camera / scanner / printer is not still a current model, do not assume that there is a Vista driver for it - CHECK.

As Vists has not yet had some pretty HUGE bugs removed yet (think service pack 1), I would not suggest ANYONE use Vista for a few months at least - let them get rid of some of the worst of the bugs first - and let the hardware manufacturers create some drivers.

Other will say "it is great, works well etc" - and indeed it may - for them. *IF* however you have peripherals which do not yet have drivers avaiable for Vista, then you will NOT be so happy.

Everybody needs help with this one because MICROSOFT IS NOT BEING ENTIRELY HONEST ABOUT VISTA.

Vista 64 bit for dual core crashes all the time, avoid it use LINUX or XP instead it is much better and the Linux it is free to download.

Vista 32 bit works OK, but you need at least 128 Mb graphics card to see the Aero effect.

Vista does have a serious drawback, that is Intel will not make chipset drivers for the video display on most of their motherboards. That means that a lot of people will try to upgrade to Vista, and will have no control over the screen resolution, everything will be too big.
MICROSOFT IS NOT TELLING THIS TO ANYBODY.
Microsoft claims that any computer with a 800Mhz processor, A DVD-ROM and 512 MB RAM will work well with Vista-NOT TRUE!!
Many systems with Windows XP will not properly upgrade to Vista.
So what does this mean to the consumer, a greater expense than you anticipated, because you will have to get an Nvidia video card to get your system to work right (only Nvidia is making Vista drivers for all of their video chipsets.) or buy another computer.
Wasteful spending for the consumer, probably, but that is what the PC industry is about, getting you to spend money on them.

EXAMPLE: Automatic Updates
Microsoft throws what software it wants in your computer, when it causes a problem, the OS generates an error report to MS. MS gets the research, and you get the problem. If you don't want your system to be a lab rat, turn off automatic updates.
MS will provide free support for update issues, but if your automatic, you may not know that an update is causing a problem. So when you call MS, they charge you for the call.
So now either repair your problem of buy a new PC. The industry loves Bill Gates.

It is a matter of how much you can tolerate from an operating system. XP does most anything any user needs. Vista is a bit faster, but there are learning curves involved. It has better security, or so they say, but at a cost of taking a lot of operations out of the hands of the average user.

If you aren't a computer professional it is doubtful that you would benefit more than a tiny amount. Wait six months and let Microsoft work out the bugs.

Ofcorse windows vista is the best but some Hrdower is still not compatible & it demands a strong Pc with a good Graphic card atleast 128Mb of Vram & 1Gb of memory if thoes conditions are gathered better go fo Vista cu it's the new system & Xp is old
As for Xp it's now used in evry Pc it Good & strong but as i said it's old & will soon expire but why puting just one when you can have them both in your Pc? Unless you don't have enough disc space cuz Xp needs 5GB of free space as for Vista well make iot 20 Gb just to be sure.

i exploit vista and there is fairly no problems as long as you replace abode windows at present and function good antivirus secret agent ware ---- > as with something of abode windows. the only undertaking ppl have with vista is that its not backwards nicely suited with your older application/hardware so except its an exceedingly huge product or is especially new youre probable gonna could improve your stuff. additionally whilst it is composed of vista and XP in case you attempt to purchase a working laptop or computing device with XP youre going to be paying extra desirable than you're able to for a working laptop or computing device with crappy specs in assessment to vista. If youre determining to purchase a sparkling computing device bypass with vista because of the fact its the destiny and XP is going to be supported much less and much less vs vista that's getting a service %. in early 2008

Vista has too many compatibility problems right now. Stick with XP or at least wait for a Vista service pack. It's just not worth it right now.

XP Computer? XP is the operating system and works on many, MANY computers.

Vista is far too buggy at the moment. I always wait at least 6 months before upgrading my OS. I had the good sense to never change to the Millennium OS...smiling.

Vista does not have all the bugs worked out of it, it was realeased too soon and does not work well with a lot of soft/hardware...stick with XP if you want something you can use......
