yes, the middle class is important to stable capitalism. Capitalists are also consumers, but there are simply not many of us capitalists around. In the US wealth (capital) is concentrated in the hands of the top 20% of the population, which combined holds 83% of the nations wealth. the top 5% of the population owns somewhere around 50% of the nations wealth. Obviously 5% is not responsible for all of the spending, it cant be because 5% of the population is only a few million people. Thats where consumers (ie middle class) comes in. The middle class supports the economy by their spending, in fact thats their primary purpose. Thats why you always hear president Bush saying that its the patriotic duty of americans to spend money. if the middle class did not exist, consumption would fall, and the wealthy (ie capitalists who invest in production) would be poorer as well. the bottom line is that for a proper markt economy to function you need a strong and stable middle class that has sufficient purchasing power to consume the products manufactured each year.

A strong middle class is the driving force behind any economy. The poor obviously have less money to spend on consumer goods. The rich have money to spend but they don't shop at K-Mart or Wal-Mart or Target or any other country's box stores. If you have no middle class the economy will collapse. One day the US economy will do just that...collapse because the middle class will all but cease to exist since the US government has allowed jobs to go elsewhere. China will one day be the driving force in the world once it's middle class begins to emerge.
