My box turtle has a mind of his own. He usually comes to me when he sees me, but I don't think he knows that I'm calling his name. Typically right after I feed him and he is not hungry he will ignore me and could care less if I live or die, like a typical animal. Has anyone ever taught their box turtle to come when called? My turtle seems to pick up more on hand motions such more than noises.

Turtles do not respond to most sounds, mostly to vibrations or visual stimuli. They really cannot hear you talking to them so will never come when you call. This is basic turtle anatomy.

They CAN however, be trained to respond to seeing you and patterns of vibrations- like opening the habitat.

Turtles dont connect with humans on an emotional level like dogs. They only come to you for food. Its possible to teach it that if it comes to its name it will get food. I guess, since ive never tried it.

I reckon it can hear you.

It's just stubborn.

Start using food rewards and I bet you can teach it to come when you call it's name!
