This is a difficult question since most insults are forms of verbal abuse. If you are trying to drag each other down, then only you would know if you have both hit rock bottom. George Carlin used to talk about a game of verbal sparring performed on the East Coast called "The Dozens." The idea was to trade insults until one person lost their temper. Whoever "lost it" was the loser. I've witnessed some of these exchanges and did notice that it helped several young people learn to manage their tempers. I guess you have to ask yourself:

1. Did either of you lose your temper?

2. Did either of you gain anything from the exchange?

3. Was anything positive accomplished by the exercise?

Sometimes the only way to win something like that is to walk away. You are in effect, saying that the other person is not worthy to waste time with. If you threw the first verbal blow, then you were risking your own reputation since most potential allies and friends are reluctant to warm up to someone they knew will turn on them. Trading insults can be fun, especially with someone you trust. It is certainly preferable to any kind of physical exchange and usually ends up with no damage done, but it can escalate into something ugly and like I said - it can come back to haunt you. It is important to let others know that you have limits, but it is just as important to protect your reputation, the reputation of your family and whatever group you might be hanging with at the time. The most effective insult is one that the other person takes as a compliment, or does not understand at all. This is a lot more challenging, and the payoff is a lot slower. (you have to wait until someone explains it to them or they get to that "OHHH NO! moment when they finally realize what you said) The possibility of a comeback is diminished greatly however, and when you get a reputation as a "Master" you are much less likely to be messed around with.

That depends on the quality of the insults traded. Maybe we should face off on that MTV show called Yo Mama.

I don't trade insults, I collect them. Especially creative ones.
