Amiri Baraka, who was born in 1934, was New Jersey's second and controversial Poet Laureate from 2002-2003. Controversy arose because his poem about 9/11 was considered anti-Semitic. The Governor of the State asked him to resign, which he refused to do, serving out his full term. After that New Jersey abolished the postiton of Poet Laureate, presumably ro avoid awkward or sticky developments. Baraka had changed his name from Le Roi Jones to affirm his African ancestry. He has written many books--poetry, plays, essays-- and continues to write. His life lies as much in literature as in social activism in the Black community. I think, though I am not certain, that he still lives in Newark, with which much of his life and work have been bound up.
