i think guys are more confident cause they dont have other guys putting them down if they are over weight. girls can be bitches to each other. they tease when someone else is over weight. plus girls look at all the celebrities and models on magazines and think that is what they have to look like.

I think that this is a really interesting point. I don't agree that all men are self confident but the gender identification aspect of role modeling has been proven (Bandura). It could be seen that men could see themselves as insignificant to their heroes as women to the disproportionately modeled Barbie, therefore creating the same negative self image issues for men. I feel that teen magazines, fashion model and the glorification of vacuous 'Icons' such as Victoria Beckham have more to do with it. Parents also play a huge role in instilling self confidence in children, sex appeal oozes from the inside from some of the most unconventional looking people. I think society as a whole is still quite patriarchal and images that objectify women and allow men to feel right in doing so still prevail and exacerbate this issue.

I think that if you grow up in a loving family that believes in you and you don't spent time comparing yourself to things that you will never be (barbies and super heroes) that this is what makes a self confident person in adulthood.
Why would super heroes be any better than barbies?

It all depends on your upbringing. Men don't have to worry about superficial beauty so much as women, but women can be very confident when they are brought up to believe in themselves. Some men are also extremely lacking in confidence due to not getting enough praise when they were growing up. It works both ways I think, but women who are obsessed with their appearence do tend to have lower self esteem because they spend all their time concentrating on, and worrying about their outer appearence, rather than developing the skills to be inwardly attractive

I know someone with raziel tattooed on his stomache and he sure thinks he's superman, I've never been able to 'identify' with Barbie and therefore my self image is good.

That's an interesting and sensible theory, but it doesn't account for the tons of unconfident men out there, nor the loads of self-assured women.
But don't get me wrong, it's an interesting and sensible theory. More like philosophy than family and relationships, though.
God bless.
