My dad told me you can't see it directly. So is there a way to see it? I mean can you build something?

I think you're dad is confusing a solar eclipse with a lunar eclipse.
A solar eclipse, where the sun is being blocked by the moon, is dangerous to watch direct without eye protection because staring at something as bright as the sun for a long time can damage your eyes and even cause blindness.
A lunar eclipse is where the earth's shadow is covering the moon. You see the full moon get darker. It is perfectly safe to watch without eye protection.

I video tapped a lunar eclipse once. it was real neat to play it back at a faster speed & then play in reverse. Even caught a plane going over with light flashing & said It looks like a UFO is comming. He is mixed up with the sun, that you need special viewing devices.
