Yes, you really should wash it first. It will not only take the starch out of it, but most shrinkage will occur during the first washing. And yes, do not forget to iron it before cutting out your pattern. This will give you a more professional look.

I would fix the tear first.The wash or dry cycle could cause more damage.

yes---the goals are to remove the sizing (chemical they treat it with to keep it stiff) and to pre-shrink it. It is also best to iron it as well to have it nice & flat to lay your pattern on

preshrinking always is best. this way you wont get a mess after you put all that effort into the job..
