I would suggest if you have never taken it, take it once in your sophomore year, so you can see what it is like. Then I would suggest in the second semester of your junior year take it. You can take it a bunch of times, but you really should have all of your standarized tests done before you are a senior. It will allow you to realistically look at schools.

Sophomores are allowed to take the SAT but usually it is taken in the late winter/early spring of your junior year. And, if you think you can improve on your score by taking it again, you can re-take the SAT in your senior year.
