I watched a programme yesterday on a young black male person who was reporting on the involvement thatf Birmingham & Liverpool (UK) had in the African slave trade. Apparently they were heavily involved in supplying guns and ammunition to Africa.
He wanted some information on the firms involved and info from Civic Centres/Councils etc.
I think he was after some kind of apology but I am not sure. It does make me feel bad, however, I was born in 1973. It was the people in power at the time who had influence. The Abhor the Slave trade and it disgusts me that it ever happened. Should we be thankful that we live in a better age or rake up the past which we can not change?
I am 33 and I do not blame young or old German people for Hitlers atrocities against the human race. They would be killed for protesting. they had to feed/clothe and provide shelter for their families. it was probably similar for English people years ago.
Surely we should move on and not be judge by our forefathers deeds

I'm a young German (born in 1981) and I do blame many of the old Germans. Not all, but many supported the Nazis in some way or at least looked away. It's an excuse when they say they would be killed for protesting. Many of them didn't want to protest at all. I feel it is important to be aware of this and to learn from history. Many things have changed in common German mentality because of this. For example, at the time of Hitler and before, antisemitism, other racism and extreme nationalism were common and presentable in Germany and Hitler could come to power in an election and he was popular with his hateful speeches. It was because of World War II and the Holocaust that people have learned something. I use to ask myself that question what I would have done if I had lived then and hope I would have acted better than the majority of Germans then. So yes, we should not be judged by our forefathers' deeds, but we must learn from them and we must not ignore them. Yes, of course we should be thankful to live in a better age and we must make sure that this remains a better age.
You mentioned a company that was involved in slave trade, there is also much discussion about the many German companies that made profit from the work of the forced laborers during World War II and that they have to pay recompensations and I think that this is right, unfortunately it is not enough and happened much too late. Such recompensations of course lose most of their sense when the people who were personally affected are already dead and this generation is dying out now.
I don't think that people born after a crime happened can apologize for what their forefathers did because it wasn't them who did that, but they should be aware of what happened.

The slave trade was a terrible thing. As the holocaust it was an unfortunate part of history. Those of us who were born a hundred or more years after the fact cannot be and are not responsible for the atrocities. My advise to you as an Amercing and a Southerner is to not dwell on it. People want someone to take responsibility for the sins of our ancestors. I didn't commit those sins and while they are terrible I owe no one an apology for them. What I do owe people is basic human respect and dignity and that is what I give them.

I'm am not racists so please don't think I am but I do hear comments from some black people even on this site that makes me think they are still bitter toward whites for slavery. Slavery was a terrrible crime against humanity, particularly the blacks but not solely the blacks. But I pointed out to this questioner that not all whites supported slavery. We northern whites fought and died to free them. I think it just depends on the person. If you are a begrudging person than you will dwell on past sins. If you are a forgiving person then you won't. Great question.
