wealth can be gained or lost at the drop of a hat, even if you loose it all you can always begin again so long as you have the confidence and drive.

If your health wanes you may no longer be able to maintain the same lifestyle you were always used to. Your work or social life may suffer, your favorite pastimes may no longer be available, or it may effect you pyscologically (mental disorder or simply depression). But despite this something can always be gained as well; be it more time to spend with family or alone, or finding another job that is more relaxing or enjoyable that you would not have thought of had you not been stricken.

A persons character is comprised of many qualities such as morals, self-esteem, confidence, determination, and concience. I assume the term "lost" means that the persons qualities have deviated or more likely degraded from their previous state.
A once happy person losing someone close to them ends up deeply depressed looking only at the negative points in life, or a person who results to crime after losing their wealth, or someone who gives up completly after losing their job, house, or partner, the list goes on and on.
But the basic fact is the same the possible positive lives these people could have lead and what that could have had are gone because they've given up on themselves or what they were.
