An error refers to a specific sort of mistake within a system that has certain rules (like logic, a computer language, etc.).

A mistake in general is an attempt to be correct wherein the result is judged or perceived to be wrong (often by force of society or an authority figure).

I guess this is the answer. Both Error n Mistake only mean doing something wrong, or doing something the wrong way, unknowingly. But, "error" is used in more formal and technical cases, but, "mistake" is more frequently n easily used.

I'd say that an "Error" is more of a technical word, whereas a "mistake" is something that's more likely to have been made by a person.

That's just my guess. I could be wrong.
