I am assuming that you are told to balance the equation.

If so, then think of it this way.

There is ZN reacting with H2SO4 to result in ZN2SO4 and H2.

Well, on the first side there is 1 ZN, 2 H, and 1 SO4. On the second side there are 2 ZN, 2 H, and 1 SO4. Obviously, the first side needs another ZN.

The new balanced formula is

2ZN + H2SO4 = ZN2SO4 + H2

Hydrochloric Acid is Hydrogen (H) and Chlorine (Cl). Now, I am not sure what grade you are in, so some of this may be too advanced, but both hydrogen and chlorine lack one valence electron. Therefore they form a single covalent bond and share one electron. Because of this, you only need one of each to create a whole molecule.

So the symbol is HCl.

I hope this helps.

Zn = zinc, S = sulphur, O = oxygen, Zn2SO4 is zinc sulphate. Pure hydrochloric acid consists of hydrogen (H) and Chlorine (CL) giving the formula hydrochloric acid = HCL (also known as hydrogen chloride). In practice hydrochloric acid is usually not found in it's pure state but mixed with water where the hydrogen forms a H+ (no electrons) positive ion and the chlorine forms a CL- (one extra electron) negative ion.
