The mini explosion when the spark ignites the petrol/gas pushes the piston.

Gasoline is flammable. It burns. And when it burns it creates heat energy. Heat created by the igniting gasoline and air mixture is what gives us the power necessary to propel an engine.

When the gas is ignited by the spark plug, it explodes, so it takes up more volume . This creates pressure in the cylinder and pushes the piston downard and thus rotates the crankshaft.

There is like a small explosion, then it moves the piston :D
