I think the most unusual thing about Equatorial Guinea is that they speak Spanish (from their colonial past)...seems unique to other parts of Africa.

I am a little confised if you are asking about the country as a whole or, as I think your question suggests, Bioko Island which is just a tiny part of one of Africa's smallest nations.
As suggested by a previous post, Equatorial Guinea was a Spanish Colonial outpost. This explains the language though there are also local languages.
Malado, the capital is located on Bioko Island and you can fly there from Madrid on Iberia. It is a Spanish Colonial City in a West Central African setting! The Government are suspicious of outsiders and there are few tourists. I believe that a permit is still needed to take any pictures in the country and even if you have one of those police will likely hassle you.
Nevertheless, for a real adventure, and if you can arrange a visa which can be a nightmare given the very overseas counular offices, then why not? You need to be a very serious and experienced traveller though.
