So I've heard many people defend the hijab as a means for protecting a woman's modesty from the lustful eyes of men/to prevent sexual harrasment. My question then is what does this say about the men in societies where hijabs are worn if the women feel the need to go to such measures to protect their modesty? Why do the women have to adjust their lifestyles by donning the hijab when it is the men who were misbehaving to begin with?

Life, just because a man can 'never not look' (a statement that I don't entirely agree with), doesn't give him the right or the justification to act disrespectfully towards women. In Israel, we call such men (who harass/disrespect women) perverts. And while there are many of those in Israel, we don't find ways to justify or condone their behavior.

Good question, but they say if the women would wear a hijab the men will stay calm and they won't have a sexual look at the women.

We cant be hypocritical persons.......we all know that men will look at women in spite of women are wearing hijab or a bikini. That is in their nature, and nature is wise. That is that way for the specie conservation. Above all we are animals.Men and women feel attracted and sometimes the way to dress helps to that. Many men say that when less women show.....more their imagination works. So hijab wont stop men's imagination.
It is only something cultural, and religious, and if we dont act as the rest of the animals (some men do it anyways) is only because we can think and because we have education.
I believe that God had other things more important than hijab to think about

I used to think exactly like that before I became a muslim. Men and women should both lower their gaze. Can you honestly say that if a woman is wearing a mini skirt and a low cut shirt that men arent going to look? Hijab is a means of prevention. I honestly dont get it why the western world is so fascinated with the "hijab". Why does anyone care if another individual prefers to wear a piece of cloth on their head. Its so funny that the act of wearing a piece of material on ones head and dressing modestly can instill snide remarks, but if a woman is wearing a micro mini and showing her breasts off, people are more acceptable. What does that say about soceity. Not much, in my opinion. By the way I seen that you have alot of concern of Israel, have you asked the Jewish women who also cover their hair and dress modestly the same question?

I believe men are going to look whether a woman wears the hijab or not. This has happened to me personally while I was in lebanon and here in the US.

Every woman has her own reasons for wearing the hijab. It shouldnt matter if someone else doesn't agree with the concept or wants to debate about it.

oh btw, in case u didn't know this already, wearing the hijab is not a selective thing, you dont choose to wear it and take it off depending on which country you are in (i am not referring to societies where the hijab is obligatory, that's another story)

The hijab is a personal choice for every woman. I have been wearing mine for many years and it has been one of the best choices i've ever made. I would never try to tell anyone that his or her opinion on the sujbect is wrong, or even that it is the divine law of god. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.

The bottom line is: A person's faith and the way they decide to follow it is between them and god.

Good Luck trying to find an aswer to your question :)

I have nothing against it. Jewish women cover their hair for the same reason. Some time ago Christian women also covered their hair.
Maybe it is wrong to make such law where every woman must wear a hijab.

when a woman wears the hijab it takes the attention away from her and by wearing a hijab the woman will make sure that she is covering all the necessary body parts and the reason that men begin the harassing is because the woman don't cover themselves properly and another reason is that SOME not all men just have the hobby of hitting on woman for the smallest reasons but if she is wearing the hijab then the men will find no reason to harass the woman

I will copy paste what I previously wrote on that subject as I was answering another question.

I don't like it. Not that I discriminate against anyone who wears it. I can't understand whats wrong if someone looks at your hair. It is a form of modesty? I guess not, I have seen girls wearing hijab along with tons of make up and tight clothing which leave nothing for the imagination. On the other hand I have seen with no hijab who are quite very moderate and conservative.

Hijab is also not convenient for example on hot summer days. I like things simple. I would never date / marry a girl who wears hijab.________________________

Edit_____
Yes and I forgot one more thing. Don't give me the "divine law" treatment. I'm sick of people telling me that I should not have an opinion on something because there is a divine law which I should follow blindly. "It's God's order... It's doesn't matter whether it's convenient for you or not. You don't know ****.. God knows better than you do".

Thank You.

Hijab is an Arabic note meaning "Veil". it truly is widely misunderstood because the genuine headscarf in reality even as it includes many different regulations and guidelines. i have self belief that the genuine headscarf area is a common outfits even as something is needed for Muslim women individuals. i does no longer imagine of you any a lot less in case you chosen to placed on or to push aside the genuine headscarf; and that i does no longer care in case you chosen to bid by technique of Islam's rulings or no longer, your existence your options.

But isn't that the same reason women (or men) wear clothes? If your understanding of " modesty" doesn't include the face in other cultures it might.
I wish my wife wore the hijab, she wouldn't complain about a bad hair day, about a pimple on her face and I would save a fortune in make up.
