Good question...I believe they can. Say one gets hooked by the gill and it tears it open. The fine mechanism that it is to get oxygen from the water is broke...water pours in. Drowned!

Yes, actually they do. They do not drown in water however, they drown in air. Same mechanism, different medium than a human.
I forgot something, until a poster below reminded me of it...if you damage a fishes gill (fishes being plural for more than one type) you will cause them to be unable to obtain oxygen from the water they are in, which will also 'drown' them.

yes...actually they do...after their mates catch them smoking & cheating & then not paying the child support....they kick them out of the bowl...& then because of the air...they drown...it is rather sad...
