Hey Kevin, the recommended daily allowance for adults is 60mg for Vitamin C. Smokers and older persons have greater need for Vitamin C. (Each cigarette destroys 25 - 100mg.) The best vitamin-C supplement is one that contains the complete C complex of bioflavonoids, hesperidin and rutin. (Sometimes these are labeled citrus salts.) Daily doses most often used are 500mg to 4 g.Rose hips vitamin C contains bioflavonoids and other enzymes that help C assimilate. They are the richest natural source of vitamin C. (The C is actually manufactured under the bud of the rose - called a hip.).
Excessive intake may cause oxalic acid and uric acid stone formation (though taking magnesium, vitamin B6 and a sufficient amount of water daily can rectify this.) Occasionally, very high doses (over 10g. daily) can cause unpleasant side effects, such as diarrhea, excess urination and skin rashes. If any of these occur, cut back on your dosage.
To maximize the effectiveness of vitamin C, remember that it works best in conjuction with bioflavonoids, calcium and magnesium.
I recommend increasing C doses if you take aspirin, which triples the excretion rate of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is water soluble and any intake exceeding the body's requirements will be excreted in your urine.
PEACE

There is no maximum - just a recommended daily allowance (RDA). Any package of Vitamin C tablets will tell you the recommended amount you should take.
Taking more than the RDA does no real good because the body just adapts and breaks down and gets rid of the excess. In fact there are stories of people taking massive amounts and then suddenly stopping altogether - because their bodies had adapted to removing Vitamin C they actually started to suffer Vit C deficiency diseases (scurvy) because they were still removing it at the "high dose rate".
If you eat a balanced diet including fruit (especially citrus fruit like oranges including orange juice) and fresh vegetables you should get all your Vitamin C requirements from that source rather than buying supplements.

Linus Pauling and others have advocated 2-3 grams (2000-3000 mg) per day routinely to prevent disease, and this amount seems perfectly safe for adults.
When fighting off a cold, some people use a gram per hour every hour that they are awake for 2-3 days. At this level it can interfere with calcium absorption, so you might feel jumpy and irritable after the second day of such extreme doses. Loose bowel movements are also a sign that you may be taking too much.
I have taken 1-2 grams per day most days for my entire adult life and never get colds, etc. Linus Paulings' work clearly demonstrated that the officially recommended amount is just the amount needed to prevent scurvy, not the amount needed for optimal health. Most "studies" use far too low a dosage to have any major benefits.

there is no maximum dose of Vitamin C, unlike other vitamins, which are stored in fats, vitamin C is stored in water. Any excess of vitamin C simply exits the body in urine.
it is not possible to overdose on Vitamin C. it is possible to overdose with other vitamins. especially vitamin A
