If you are keeping the knob pushed in for as long as you are supposed to and still having problems you may need to change the thermocouple. It is a rod about 5 inches long that has a small gas line attached to one end and it stops right where you light the pilot.

The thermocouple has gone. This is a safety device wich prevents the boiler from filling with unlit gas. The thermocouple is a small probe wich pokes into the pilot light that is why you have to hold the pilot button in for a while when lighting the boiler . A new universal thermocouple will set you back about ten quid and are quite easy to change.Good luck.
