colder because the atmosphere is thinner as you go up and the paticles in the atmosphere are mainly what get warmed up by the sun (besides the earths surface).

this is one reason why there is snow on mountain tops even in places like arizona.

Places of a higher altitude are colder than sea level because warmth from the oceans keeps coastal plains warmer.

The temperature decreases 1 degree celsius for every 32 m increase in altitude. The sun's rays fall slanting when we go up. Since they are not concentrated then, they are less warm. So, the temperature is lower at higher altitudes.
