Simple Formula
take the square feet x thickness / 27 equals cubic yards
16 ft2 x 1 foot thick equals .59 cubic yards
or
16 ft2 x four inches (.33 of one foot) / 27 equals .19 cubic yards
or add the inches
16 ft2 x one inch (.0833 of a foot) / 27 equals .049 Cubic yards per inch take that and multiply your inches
.049 x 3 (inches) equals .147 cubic yards

There are 9 sq. feet in 1 sq. yard. so to determine the answer you divide 16 by 9 (16/9) and the answer is 1.77777777777777777777777778 or 1.8.
Mental note to self: never let William P. figure out how much concrete I would need on a job.

1.78 sq. yds. For detailed understanding pl read the following:
1 yd = 3 ft.
1 sq.yd. = 9 sq.ft.
1ft. = 12 inches
1sq.ft. = 144 inches
16 sq.ft. = 1.78 sq.yds. As u have given the area 16 sq.ft. so the conversion will also be in sq. yds. Otherwise 3 ft. = 1 yd.
