There's loads of info about the song on Wikipedia, including several different sets of lyrics. However, it doesn't seem to have the ones sung in the famous film 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' by James Cagney, which I think began 'Yankee Doodle went to London, just to ride the ponies...'

I do not know. I have researched several sites, found explanations of the song and times. But no reference as to what town he was going to. I think that it is a general reference and not site specific.
