Might seem a bit random but do you think Stockport a district of Manchester, a suburb or an independent town? (Forget that its in the Greater Manchester county for a min..)

The present day City of Manchester comprises some 30 districts or township suburbs, which are,

Ancoats, Collyhurst,Moss Side,
Ardwick, Crumpsall, Moston
Beswick, Didsbury, Newton Heath,
Blackley Fallowfield Northenden
Bradford Gorton Openshaw
Burnage Harpurhey Rusholme
Cheetham Hulme Victoria Park
Chorlton-***-Hardy Levenshulme Whalley Range
Chorlton on Medlock Longsight Withington & Ladybarn
Clayton Miles Platting Wythenshawe

so stockport is an independent town

My Auntie lives in Stockport. It used to be a separate village/town but its now a suburb of Greater Manchester. It comes under Cheshire.

It is now classed as being in Greater Manchester. But in actual fact it is in the county of Cheshire. Because of the density of traffic, it would probably take about twenty minutes by car or bus. I think it's about six mile from the centre of Manchester. Takes 5 min by non stop train.

It is NOT in Manchester itself. But, as you say, it is in Greater Manchester.
I know this as I am a Mancunian and used to have a girlfriend in Stockport.

It certainly used to be in Cheshire. But it is now in the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester.

It's actually classed as Cheshire, but universally said to be in 'Greater Manchester'. It has its own town hall and sets its own Council Tax. (My parents in law live there and it's only a couple of miles from where I live).
