I was a prolific nail biter for 44yrs, couldn't do zips up, button's were left undone, threading a needle was a nightmare, i couldn't even hold a pen or a pencil, all because the pain was so intense at the tips of my fingers where i had chewed the nails to the point of not having any left--last year a friend told me to try "Perfect 10-stop biting for nails"--believe me, this stuff really works! Apply just as you would--(if you are a woman that is!)--regular nail varnish. The beauty of this stuff is that it contains vitamin e, which strengthens the nails...also, as you wash your hands, the stronger the stuff gets on the nails! I generally re-apply every 4 or 5 weeks, my nails look and feel strong and firm, and i don't have any pain in my fingers any more! Hope that helps.

Go for regular manicures - this will show you how good your nails can look and when you are spending money on them you dont want to ruin them.

I painted my sister in laws nails at new year and she didnt bite them for ages after that because she didnt want to chip the colour and she is a complete nail biting addict.

If you dont realise you are doing it, painting them a bright colour will sometimes catch your eye as you are lifting your hand to your mouth and this will remind you not to do it

Hypno could work just as it works with every habit so why not give it a bash if it means you will end up with lovely nails.

hey, i have the same problem. none of the stuff works for me one thing i noticed was that onvacation i didnt bite my nails much, and by the end they were not as bitten as before, and when i got in school again, i thought it would be fine, but by third period i had bitten them. i established that my case has to do with pressure., thats a start.. i noticed that after vacation, my friend who also has this problem's nails were better, and that it must have to do with pressure.

another of my friends had the awful habit.... and she used nail strengthener. sure, it may not do anything, but i have noticed that i grow my nails a bit, then bite em' and repeat the process. i believe now that i bite them because by the time they get to a certain point of growth, they are too flimsy and damaged and easy to bite off.

i know someone who was training in psychology, and although i am not her, she told me that she learned how to hypnotize people and that her teacher hypnotizted her for an example. she said you really have to want it- and sometimes it works. she did it to study harder because she had a hard time studying, and now she gets much better grades than ever before.

a technique i have tried is putting bandaids on all your fingers. sounds rediculous, but it kinda works. the only down sides are that your fingertips get like how they are after you have had a bandaid on for a while, and it looks kind of silly.

i askeed a similar question on yahoo about a year ago... someone told me you can got to the doctors and get bars put under your nails so u cant bite them off... but if you are like me, you have no nails to put the bar under... (not literally, just not a space b/c of cuticles)

ihope i helped you, S.

I feel sorry for you, habits are hard to break, smoking, drinking and eating all come under the same category, obsessive habits that aren't good for you. There are no easy answers, lots of will power, false nails ? maybe, I have heard of people wearing a rubber band on their wrist and as soon as the urge to bite comes, pull the rubber band back and let'er go, the sting may reprogram your brain to control the biting. If nothing else works, you may have to remove all your teeth and gum it.

Even though they are short, try using some nail varnish. You will notice the colour when you start to chew and should remind you to leave them alone. Worked for me and after a week I saw a difference and that inspired me to carry on.

i used to bite my nails a lot too, but resolved to stop. i didn't have to do this, but if you are really that bad, i'd recommend that you go to a salon and get your nails done. that way, whenever you feel tempted to bite them, remember just how expensive that manicure was, and how you DON'T want to ruin it. it sounds silly, but once you've stopped biting them for a few weeks, you just won't need to do it anymore. well at least that was what it was like for me. i can now grow my nails peacefully. those bad tasting things don't work at all. good luck.

Next time you are in the park, find some fresh dog do and dip the tips of your fingers in it. 100% guarantee you will not bite your nails ever again. This is also a good way to diet, as you really do not feel like eating for a few days......I hope I have been of help
