To protect your computer from viruses use AVG, that's one of the best antivirus sofware out there.

For spyware protection and as a first line of defense use SpywareBlaster. This program will completely block spyware from installing to your computer when you surf the internet. As a second line of defense use a safer browser, for example one that has spyware protection in it (Firefox is fine for that).

Your last line of defense comes with programs like Adaware that you have already installed in your machine. Run this program once a week or whenever you're suspecting problems with your computer.

A program similar to Adware but more powerful is Spybot Search & Destroy. It will remove all traces of malware etc and the popups will stop from showing up. For even better results run both Adware and Spybot Search & Destroy in safe mode if you can.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

there is no better protection than merely being careful. i have been operating Vista for six months, put in Norton 2 days in the past, and stumbled on 3 threats - cookies that I delete each and each evening. merely Google each little thing earlier you receive it, sparkling your cache and cookies earlier you shutdown, do not click commercials, and use *Firefox*.
