Ask on a forum with serious gamers and you'll get a rather different set of answers. WOW might get a mention, maybe. But probably not.

The usual suspects:

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Reasonably new game, great graphics, open play, good storyline

Baldurs Gate. Often credited with single handedly restoring the genre. Certainly rescued D&D on the computer. Great storyline.

Fallout: Unusual post apocalyptic setting, solid design, good story and the ability to kick rats in the nads.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Nice translation of a paper game to computer, amazing storyline with some real surprises.

Neverwinter Nights. A solid translation of D&D to the computer, decent story. Best known for module creation though.

D&D: Planescape: Torment. The only one of these I haven't played, garners mention for a VERY unconventional storyline, or so I'm always told.

If I was forced to name a single best game out of those, I'd probably go with Fallout, but it would be a very close run with Oblivion.
