Goldfish are medium tank dwellers (they tend to hang around in the middle of both surfaces).

However they feed pretty much anywhere in the tank. On the aquarium bed, the water's surface or whatever!

With most fish - you can normally tell where they prefer to eat by the position of their mouth. Upwardly facing mouths prefer surface food ... and so on.

The position of the mouth can also give clues as to whether a fish is predatory. The fish with mouths in the middle tend to be the aggressive, often territorial types. Though this as 'theorem' is not ... er ... 'water tight'!

Goldfish are also notoriously greedy and active. The sort of labradors of the fishy world! They can actually kill themselves through over eating. And - though not necessarily aggressive can upset the lives of more mellowed out fish - with their constant bouncing around in search of food.

Rather than answer your questions piecemeal here is some more information on goldfish for your science project. Try and google for more on the net. You will have a greater sense of achiement in doing your own research.
History
Goldfish originated from a species of fish called the Crucian carp. No one knows for certain when they were domesticated, but ancient Chinese art and literature suggests they have been kept in Chinese homes since 800 AD. Goldfish became widespread in many other countries in the Far East after 1650. At this time, Europeans were trading with the East and brought goldfish back to Europe with them. At first, goldfish were kept in outside ponds and were not housed indoors until the late 1800s.
Life span
The average lifespan of a goldfish is 5-10 years.
Distribution and Habitat in the wild
Goldfish (Carassius auratus) range from Eastern Europe across to China and inhabit well-vegetated pools and lakes.
Behaviour in the wild
Goldfish breed in the summer and many males chase one female in desperation to fertilise her. They spawn (distribute the fertilised eggs) over aquatic vegetation, and the eggs hatch after about a week. Goldfish feed on crustaceans, insect larvae, molluscs and some vegetation.

They lie in wait at an eddy in the river, so as you go to the river to get some water, they leap out and swallow you. lol

OR, they swim around the bowl, and wait for you to sprinkle in some food, which they consume with their mouths....
