OK, i opened the computer- really couldn't make sense of the cables, just a tangle of different coloured bands and wires that don't fit either of your descriptions. But I did notice that 'SATA' is written on the motherboard...does this mean my hard drive is SATA?

The label on the drive will tell you, otherwise an IDE drive has a large 40pin data cable that connects it to the motherboard. A SATA drive has a smaller cable that connects it to the motherboard. All of the SATA cables i have seen are blue but there could be other colors around as well.

Do you mean ...How do you tell between Parrallel and Serial ATA? Parrallel IDE uses the 40pin 'ribbon' type cable. Sata uses a narrow sometimes red and flat cable and the connector is a very narrow 'L' shape about a 1/2inch wide or so, unlike the almost or about two inch 40 pin connector.
