"Ask me but don't task me."
I don't know how I came about it, but I don't know the exact meaning.

For me, the cardinal rule of leadership is to ask first and if you don't get the desired result, then make it imperitive. Just remember that once you have to tell someone to do something, you will never be able to "ask" them to do it. Think about it. It makes sense.

this phrase simply means that you can seek the advice of someone over something but donot expect him to do that for you.
in short seek advice but work on own.
