I have used Roach-Pruf in roach-infested apartments I have rented and, even though the neighbors still had a problem, my apartment was free of them.

I had this problem at one of the places I rented when I was a student. The landlord got someone from pest control to come and spray the whole apartment every few weeks. I think that's the only effective method. The traps don't actually trap cockroaches, but they are merely used as a detector to see if the problem is getting better or worse.

Your local hardware/gardening shop might also sell cockroach sprays in a can. I got this and sprayed all round the edges of my room, that helps keep them out but doesn't get rid of them. They like to crawl round edges and in small gaps, so it's unlikely you'll find them in open spaces (unless their's a huge swarm of them, in which case, just move out!). Although, the sprays aren't exactly healthy for humans, so try to do it and leave the house for a few hours.

I highly recommend getting in the experts who will look for the eggs and the species of cockroaches, and will know the best method to get rid of them. You should also try to keep places clean (like kitchen surfaces), food sealed up and any places that might accumulate water dry, such as spillages and steam in the bathroom. This will at least reduce their food supply.

Good luck!

You have 3 options:

1) Call Rentokil
2) Move Out
3) Befriend them

However what is it or who is it they are attracted to I wonder.

Crumbs on floor or swept between the cracks of a floor, on surfaces or food stuffs stored in cupboards that are easily gotten into will attract all sorts of pests.

Even if Rentokil solve the problem - you will get more if you do not address the cause of infestation. Hygiene is the key, and tell the neighbour to stop chucking food debris on the ground else rats will be the next thing.

Spray the heck out of the whole building. Or move immediately. I've spent 4 months living in a place infested with roaches, and I have a phobia of them now. Get out! They spread diseases, and shed small pieces of their exoskeleton, which becomes dust in the air and is a leading cause of allergies.

Boric Acid woks wonders, it comes in powder or chalk form, just spread it all around the edges, even on the outside of your house. It is safe for humans and pets.

Like I told the last guy, move out. There's no getting rid of 'em.They lay eggs everywhere, your TV back of the fridge in your stove.Bombing your place won't do much. It'll seem like they're gone but really they ran and hid from the poisonous gas.

It sounds to me like you have a serious infestation. I hate to say it, but this may be one of those times you have to bite the bullet and hire a professional.
