it is an indication that the woman is capable of becoming a mother...

women start having monthly periods between 12 to 14 year of age approx... these periods occur at a gap of 26 days to 30 days approx... the duration of periods is of 4 days during which the 'bleeding' continues...

these periods show that the woman is able to become a mother... the fluid that bleeds is the one that helps the foetus grow inside mother's womb on having conceived... as once the mother becomes pregnant the periods and bleeding stop from the following month...

this capability of motherhood continues until the age of 50+ year approx when the cycles of periods stop... rendering the women incapable for motherhood... that is called menopause...

Women menstruate when they hit puberty because every girl, or woman loses an egg (or 2!) each month. If the egg is not fertilized and implanted into the uterus, the uterus sheds it's built-up tissue and therefore you bleed.

I certainly wish God hadn't created periods!

There HAS to be another answer besides to have babies. If that were the reason, I'd be having them. Instead, I go through the monthly mess and cramps for NOTHING. I think the real reason is to give us a legitimate excuse to not have to have sex. "Not tonight dear, I have a headache" gets old.
