Yes, Lincoln was President of the United States and would not allow the South to secede from the Union because he saw that as inevitably weakening this country to the point of being over run by foreign powers. Thus the war resulted.

As you say, He was on the Union Side! He did take the OATH of Office and did have to do his best to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of The United States of America. So he did take his stand to Keep the States United in every way he could. Why they always say North and South is because most of the States that did split from the Union was in the South of the Country and Most that did stay were in the North. This Man had the Job at the Hardest Time our Country ever had! Our own people at War with each other!!!!
