Check your processes not just applications. Sometimes there can be a lot of background processes running which will slow things right down. Try closing a few, windows generally won't let you close anything that would damage your computer anyway.

Sounds like you have some processes running in the background that aren't apparent to you. When you go into task manager, click on the "Processes" tab. It will show you everything that's running, including system programs. If anything looks suspicious, you can generally search for the image name online and get an explanation of it. Obviously, if it's spyware or other malware, it's something you want to get rid of; 50% is a lot of cycles, especially if you have a relatively recent processor.

Usually when a computer is running or busy with any software like checking of computer drives through antiviruse software in background, " while it is enabled by administrator of a network", so it will show nothing running on ur computer screen, but doing its work in background. And sometimes it happens while you have share file in ur network from ur computer, and some one is involved in using it, and also it happnes while ur computer is affected by a virus, and ur computer doesnt have an update antivirus running programmes. I think these are the main reasons of happening such causes.

hello,
thier a many other processes that go on in the background. you can look at them in the processes tab. these processes use up cpu. On the other hand, you might be infected with a malware disguised as a windows file and running to slow you system.
you can download prevx1 trial from www.prevx.com. scan you system for malware. make sure you are connected to the internet when you scan.

when you are saying performance do you mean your cpu usage? If so then it could also be a simptom of excessive swap files if you have only a small amount of ram but i do agree that it is prob the processes. get a good spyware checker as well
