Not having read Lord of the Rings, I know that I really do not have any right to answer. But being a huge Harry Potter fan, I could not resist.I have read Eragon and did not it enjoy much. The real charm of Harry Potter, I think, is that the fantasy seems so believable. The books are almost scientifically written with everything from drama to mystery to fun to romance thrown in.And of course the atmosphere is MAGICAL. Also the language is easy and refreshing. Most other books of this genre I have found to be rather wild and overwhelming. But the HP series makes one believe in the wizarding world.

I don't think Eragon is even at all competitive here. The language of the text is impressive due to the author's age when writing, but in general, it's fairly poor. Further, everything in the book is stolen from some other book.
Harry Potter is written by a far more skilled writer than Eragon, but J.K. Rowling is still not a particularly great writer. First, she doesn't actually recreate a "wizard world." There's the school and the town, and the rest of the world of Harry Potter looks like today. She focuses on one character and relates him to her audience. Thus, her project is actually a much smaller one than it might seem.
Tolkien, on the other hand, paved the way for writers like Rowling and Paolini. His texts are not derivative, he conjured an entire language out of thin air, he invented an elaborate history, and he created some of the most stolen characters in the history of the English language.
Tolkien is definitely far above Rowling and Paolini. (Although I wish the latter the best in the future.)

Lord of the Rings. No question. It's a work of pure creative genius, and even if it does seem hard to read or long, that's the point. It's a detailed "history" fantasy. The characters are compelling, the story is absorbing, and there are lots of random things to memorize and scare people with! Just kidding on that last one.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those LotR fans who thinks that anyone who likes Harry Potter is a minion of Sauron. I'm a Harry Potter fan myself! I just like Lord of the Rings better.
(I read half of Eragon. It was okay, and I'm impressed that Paolini could do so well in his teens. But 'okay' is still only 'okay'.)

Of those three, LotR (and the Hobbit). I find the character studies and the intricate plot intriguiging.
However, I also really appreciate the Harry Potter series. I think Rowlings has done a great job with her characters, and I love the way she pulls in almost forgotten medieval motifs and themes in her stories.
Eragon, I find disappointing.
Finally, I suggest you also look into C.S. Lewis (The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe is one book of a seven book series; the Horse and His Boy is my favourite), Anne McCaffery (Dragonsong), Ursula Le Guin (Wizard of Earthsea), Robin McKinley (The Hero and the Crown), and Stephen R. Lawhead (In the Hall of the Dragon King, and The Paradise War).

For me it's Lord of the Rings, Tolkien was a genius and no fantasy author will ever compare to him and the amount of work and time he put into it, you can see how much love he poured into everything involving middle-earth.
I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but as a writer I will say Rowling is very talented, she tells a good story and writes very fluently with good character.
Eragon however? Pure rubbish. He took the plot of Star Wars, replaced Jedi with Dragonriders, Lightsabers with swords, and C-3P0 and R2-D2 with an Elf and a Dwarf, who, by the way, are almost exactly like Legolas and Gimli. He's not a plagiarist, but he's not original at all, and his style is horribly unreadable. He's very mechanical, it's obvious he didn't care about his story, he cared about money.

I LOVE ERAGON!
Lord of the Rings was a little slow in parts of the book, and the first few Harry Potters were okay, and they are getting bad now.
ERAGON RULES!
Yes, I know Eragon is a little slow too, but the last battle at the end is AWESOME!
I <3 ERAGON!
I'm sorry if you disagree with me, but you asked for my opinion and I answered!

Harry Potter is my favorite, because JK Rowling has such a wonderful style, amusing and refreshing, but the action parts are still faced-paced, edge of your seat. She started it all. The Lord of the Rings to me was not as god as the movies, and Eragon was good, but you can't connect with the characters as well. The characters in Harry Potter, they are so real, you just want them to come alive, you want to live in their world, it seems so wonderful!

potter, It has been part of me growing up. JK rowling has an amazing ability to connect everything together and mention things that seem of no significance and turn out to be the answer to everything. and what other series has inspired a generation of children to read again. people my age and younger picked up LOTR and Eragon becuase they started harry potter. The fanbase, podcasts and websites also add to the experience.
