I am writing a book in another world similar (but different) than the one in Eragon, and about young man who discovers he has something special and goes on a dangerous quest with a powerful, old man to discover his powers. There are many things that make this book different than eragon (in a big way) but it has Elves and Dwarves and Men (even though the Dwarves aren't short, they are really big.) I was wondering if people find this too close to Eragon, or would welcome another fantasy bok full of action.

Thanks for the help, but to clarify for some...I was wondering if you would look at the plot and say, "Hey, this guy is just copying all the other fantasy writers out there" (which I am not, there are major differences, as in differences in Elves and Dwarves, how they look and act and such ), or you would want to read it. Also, would it upset you if cliche's about Elves and Dwarves weren't used, or if they were? That's my big problem, to make Elves and Dwarves different than other books, or the same.

I don't want to spoil anything for you, but Paolini is not the first to use elves and dwarves. Not by a long shot. I wouldn't worry about sounding too much like Eragon. It will be forgotten in a few years.

Read Tolkien.

The concept of elves or dwarves or dragons or wizards is not one of cliche' but of iconography. If you say "DWARF" people know exactly what you are talking about immediately. If you say "GIMLY, GLOIN's SON" Fans of Tolkien know of whom you speak. Find the book URSHURAK (Brothers Hildebrandt...excellent artwork) and see what they did with the various concepts you're incorporating into your work. Also the worlds of DRAGONLANCE (Weiss & Hickman) might help influence your writing.
The tales of fantasy are basically those of the "PICARRO," the youth coming of age and finding what home is. Disney's made a mint with this thematic base for stories.
There is always an audience for good stories.
Yes, I would read your work.

I would read it, many books are compared to others as a matter of fact Eragon has been compared to Lord Of The Ring. So yes there is room for yours.

I would read it.I wouldn't care if it was similar to Eragon because each book has different qualities different characters and different plot.Your book would be different to eragon because you have your own style and no Paulini's style. If you finish it you can send it to me if you want.it would be a pleasure to read it!!!!!

Go for it, it may be more popular than the Eragon book.

The problem is not that your plot is too close to Eragon. The problem is that, like Eragon, your plot is chock-full of cliche! Please, shoot for something a little more original.

No, sorry. Not a fantasy fan. Write a murder mystery or detective story. I'd read that.
