make sure that your router is using DHCP this automatically gives out IP's to the connecting computer.

each machine wil need the following

same workgroup this will allow them to see each other

each machine will have a different name e.g. upstairs pc / downstairs pc but not the same name.

this will allow you to tell which is which.

take notes so that you can compare when setting other machine

win xp has a network wizard which will help you and is also easy to use. i prefer to set this up manually on each machine.

to test if all is ok.

click my network places then entire network then microsoft windows network.

you should now see your workgroup name.

by clicking on this it will show all pc's within this work group.
click on the specific pc and you should be able to view shared files on the other machine, you may wish to make a shortcut for future use.

if you have a printer on a machine you may share this to.

go to printers and faxes, right click on the printer and click sharing, you will have to instal the printer driver on the other machine and it may only be used if the pc connected to the printer is switched on.

In order for the wireless networking to be working correctly, they both should be using the same SSID and security key. If they're not, then either one isn't connected to the net, you're not using seciruty, or maybe one is connected to someone else's network.

If the networking is fine, then all you should have to do is make sure both computers are in the same work group.

Each PC on a network should have a different IP number 192.168.1.1 is usually your modem address so any number above 1 (IE 192.168.1.2 for PC 1 and 192.168.1.3 for PC 2 etc) All the PCs on the network should have the same group name (IE MSHOME or what you choose). Make sure your firewall on each PC allows the IP of the other PCs so you can transfer files and allow the folder or folders you want to share be set to shared (right click on the folder icon and select properties, click on the radio button to set it). Good luck!
