A person below 40 can be a politician. It's just that society tends to respect age directly proportionally with wisdom.

As long as you meet the minimum requirements, you can run for any office from the local school board to President of the United States. Many highly visible politicians may be 60 or older, but they have raised their families, worked their careers, & now have time on their hands, but there are many politicians who are much younger than 60.
My state rep & my congressman are in their 40's. Both of these men were just elected in Nov, so I don;t know how long they will be in office or how effective they will be. The man my state rep replaced was elected when he was only 18 yrs old & barely graduated high school. It is possible to get elected as a younger politician, but you must have the network & listen to voters.

the biggest group of voters are senior citizens, we vote who we are comfortable with, people of common age grew up together, think more alike and therefore vote for what is comfortable. just as you feel that the seniors are old fashioned and conservative to your values, you find more in common with candidates more your generation.
there are younger politicians, but they are the exception not the norm, takes time to build the contacts, money and network to win an election, most younger people are involved in more things that take time from politics, whereas the seniors have more time to devote to causes

It takes years to build people behind you that would benifit for you being in office. It now seems that it takes an average of 25 million to win a spot. If you can raise 26 million then you should win.
