The story of Kannagi who lived in Puhar Chola kingdom is a Tamil epic SILAPPADHIKARAM, the theatrical work of Elango Adigal who lived 1700 years ago in Chera Kingdom.

Kannagi was a historic lady who fought with a king for her husband's death. The king actually suspected kannagi's husband for stealing queen's jewellery and trying to sell it. So he announced death sentence for him.However, it was not the queen's jewellery but was kannagi's instead.Therefore, kannagi fought with the king for justice and after knowing his mistake, the king died.In her anger, she cursed Madurai( a city in Tamilnadu) to be burnt in fire. And it did happen.Therefore,she is very famous in Tamilnadu.
