Its a great way of tracking old friends who you've lost touch with. You can also get to know your friends' friends and meet knew people. You can join communities that are set up according to various interests / hobbies and share info with other ppl.....

BUT....

the biggest disadvantage is the lack of privacy. Anyone with an orkut account from anywhere in the world can read your details, read messages that you send and receive and find out things about you. So if you're a person who likes their privacy, joining orkut is a bad idea. Other than that, its supposed to be great fun.
