I currently have a drum style humidifier on my forced air system. I've been told that a flow through design might be a better choice. Before I spend money on one can someone give me some insights? Thanks.

Neiether system would work as good as a steam humifider, although it uses a heating element to evaporate the water, but does so at a much more effiecent rate, it does not rely on the furnace to supply the heat to evaorate the water, and it is actually much better because it can only take couple hours for you house to reach it desired humidity levels, and can be controlled more precisely, such as during the day you want more humidity and less at night as it will condesnse on the windows more so. If you are really concerned about buying the best and the most reliable buy a steam humifider. I had owned a drum type and hated it! the maintence on it is stupid, same with the flow thru. The steam humifider has little to no maintence only thing that is required is to open the drain valve and un-plug it at the end of the heating season.

Drum style is better because the flow thru just wastes water for no reason. There is a style of drum humidifier from a company called springaire that uses no drum filter media, just a ceramic drum that never needs changing. It's about 200 Dollars US, so a bit more expensive than others, but you never have to clean it or change media, so it's worth it in the long run. AND IT REALLY ADDS MOISTURE TO THE HOUSE!!!.

Each has it disadvantages. The sponge on the drum style will degrade over time. Flow Thru is better than drum style, but it wastes a great amount of water.
