As a computer technician, I've came across many computer problems. Yeah, you probably can't afford a Mac, which is good, because Mac sucks.

I work on Compaq PCs more than any other PCs. They don't Last!!! I agree with Dell Tech, HP is poorly made; they never last, either, and I receive a ton of these PC at my PC repair shop. The best put together computer I come across so far is, of course, a Dell. Unfortunately, you can't go to any convenient store and buy a Dell parts for your computer; they're like Mac parts...

I was so happy to get in inside of a Dell. A customer came to my shop with a Dell and I was impressed of the awesome parts that Dell uses in their product. I even had problems repairing the notebook. I had to call them over the phone and ask certain questions. Imagine that, eh? Cause I am a tech.

Dell computers, in my opnion, are the BEST. They're very interesting.

I Would suggest Acer or HP.

Acer a long standing name in computers and laptops have over the last few years been ramping up to become one of if not the top supplier of PC's and laptops. They are aggressiviely priced and good quality and value. I have an Aspire laptop bought from ebuyer, wide screen (glass type (very clear), fast truion processor and it was £400. I have since installed windows vista and it still goes like a rocket.

HP have recently been voted best by the public for the quality and support. I sometimes sell HP laptops as an alternative to Acer, but they are not as cheap but god quality.

For £500 you will get a good laptop for what you want to do with it. I wouldnt buy of ebay though as support could be difficult later on for one of many reasons.

Good luck

Definitely a Dell!! People been hating on Dell computer because they failed to take care of their Pcs and blame Dell for it... Of course Dell has its own issues, so does ever other company... Note that Compaq PC are poorly made, while HP is known a #1 headache... If Dell is such a bad PC company, then why Dell keeps winning PC award every year?

I have 3 Dell PCs, one is 7 years old and I have never changed a parts on it, and it runs like brand new, and my other two PCs have never encountered a problem, so I don't know what's wrong with these haters for Dell.

Shop at Dell. I highly recommended Dell over all PC... You won't just get a Dell PC, but a top class PC that has been dominating all PC nominees so far. Visit the Link below

PC world do a great range of toshiba laptops, and often have them on offer on line and in store, i got one last year from them for the same uses as you need it. It was under £500 (£449). It came with microsoft works which is almost as good as the word packages.
Only thing is support from them is not great.

I agree with DTB about Dell being bad and Toshiba good. You should be able to get a new Toshiba for that price. I got my Satellite Pro through ebuyer.

512 MB is worth having as is Windows XP Pro.
