Microsoft is a company that wants to make money(lots) so every few years they come out with a new operating system to make more billions of dollars.Every new operating system has a new interface and the latest bells and whistles but an operating system is really your personal choice.I run Windows XP Pro and I am very happy with it and have no plans of buying Vista anytime soon.If I build or buy a new computer in the future I may use Vista but from what I have seen of Vista so far it has a new interface that is nice but there main goal with Vista was security. It has a few new features but I cannot say it is better then Windows XP Pro with SP2.So my friend it is your choice if your happy with what operating system your are presently using keep it and save yourself a few dollars,if not buy Vista but you must make sure your PC has the hardware to run Vista. Vista requires at least 1000 megs of memory and a really good video card. There is a compatibility software program you can download at Microsoft to test your PC to see if it can run Vista. I think there are five versions of Windows Vista so this compatibility test will tell you which configuration is best for your current PC setup.

I put Vista on my computer hoping it would enhance multimedia performance and was very disappointed. Because most of the drivers available for sound cards and video cards are still in Beta the performance was very weak. I would wait until more hardware companies develop better and more stable drivers.

After 4 months of using it, I think it's actually quite pleasant.
One thing for sure, if you don't have the video card specs, or system memory, you will have a poor experience.
Many aspects are more secure, smoother, and well designed. And the graphics are excellent.
when you're ready, go for it.
