He may be claiming you as an "independent contractor". If so and he is audited there will be problems for him.
An independent contractor works their own hours not when a "boss" tells them to.
If so, you will be given a 1099 at the end of the year. Then all the taxes that should have been deducted will be due from you. This will amount to about one-third of your total pay for the year.
Legitimate assistants are paid with all kinds of deductions taken out such as federal, state and local taxes. FICA, FUTA and maybe 401k contribution.

Looks fishy. Ask him. If it is under the table. You could just pocket the money and pay no taxes---but don't get caught. The IRS is touchy about it. If he gets mad at you asking and you get fired, then it was his loss and you know he is doing things illegally. If you were hired as a contractor, you figure out your taxes yourself, remember to put away about 1/3 of your wages to pay what you owe at the end of the year.

First of all, if you don't know then ask. Keep in mind, you're new so you can get away with asking stuff like that. It may be common for a position like yours to be paid that way. If you're collecting $ and he's not taking out taxes you'll owe a chunk of that to the IRS. Chances are he's going to report he paid you so he can take the deduction....so it's your butt on the line if taxes aren't paid, not his.

He may have you on as an independent contractor, in which case, he needs to supply you with a 1099 form instead of a W2. This is legal as long as he does this. (Though if he did, he really should have told you)

If you don't clock in somewhere, than you're probably getting paid under the table. And if they don't take out taxes, then who cares! You're getting more money, and they're the one whos will get in troubloe, not you.
